Spirit of giving

ASSUNTA Spirit Week is an annual event organised by SMK Assunta prefects to help strengthen the students’ love for the school via the values it instills through its motto — Ad Veritatem Per Caritatem (To truth through charity).

This year’s theme “Can I Help You?” was chosen because there were many major social events happening around the world.

The objective of Assunta Spirit Week 2009 was not only to enhance awareness of these social events and issues but also to highlight the various channels for students to contribute.

All smiles at the cheque presentation ceremony were (from left) SMK Assunta principal Hong Yin Wah, Viktor,SMK Assunta senior assistant (student affairs) Normah Ismail, discipline teacher Many A and organising chairperson Shivathmihai Nagappan.

It also aimed to inculcate, in the students, the spirit of giving back to the community.

The eight Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations were adopted as the focus point for activities held throughout the week.

These activities included a charity drive to collect donations for the Malaysian AIDS Council, a speech by Universiti Malaya’s Assoc Prof Dr Edmund Terence Gomez on how students can participate to realise the eight millennium development goals, slide presentations and quizzes.

A total of RM1,218 was collected and handed over to Malaysian AIDS Council senior executive director Viktor Alhabshi.

The event also provided the perfect platform for the students to ponder on how they could make the world a better place to live in.
